Shonan Kamakura General Hospital offers a wide range of diagnostic services and procedures.
daVinci Surgical System
daVinci was developed to enable complex surgical procedures using minimally invasive technology. The device consists of a robotic part, an operating part, and a monitor for the assistant, and accurately reproduces the movements of a human hand under the high quality, three-dimensional surgical images of a 3D high-definition system. The robotic part is equipped with four robotic arms and an endoscope to which forceps and scalpels are attached at the tips, and the surgeon can perform sophisticated surgery using instruments with wrists that bend and rotate much more significantly than a human wrist while viewing clear endoscopic images projected on the box-shaped control unit. In addition, this robot-assisted surgery is performed completely under the control of the physician.
Proton therapy
Proton beams have the character of reaching a peak dose at a certain depth and stopping, and this stopping position can be adjusted by changing the energy of the proton beam. Therefore, the proton beam is administered with the hope of eradicating the cancer by exposing it to a large dose of radiation, while fine adjustments are made so as not to cause side effects in the normal tissues. Proton beams are the ideal radiation that can deliver a high dose to the cancer while reducing the dose to the surrounding normal tissues.
Remote After-Loading System (RALS)
Remote After-Loading System (RALS) is a type of radiation therapy for malignant tumors that delivers radiation from very close to the tumor, thus enabling the delivery of large doses of radiation and effectively killing tumor cells. On the other hand, radiation does not spread far, minimizing exposure to surrounding normal tissues and reducing side effects.
TomoTherapy® HI-ART Radiation Therapy System
SKGH now offers the TomoTherapy® HI-ART system, a revolutionary new radiotherapy treatment for a wide variety of cancers.
This advanced treatment method uses CT scanning to precisely target cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues.
Targeted radiation treatments are delivered by rotating beamlets to large, small, and multiple cancerous areas.
With our TomoTherapy system now in operation, we are able to open up new treatment options for patients who have reached maximum tolerance dose of healthy tissue, or who have tumors in hard-to-reach areas.
320 multi-slice Computed Tomography (CT) Scanner
High precision imaging in 0.35 seconds.
Compared to traditional CT technology, the 320 multi-slice CT covers 16 cm (6.3 inches) of anatomy, an area large enough to capture a full image of an organ. Images are captured in 0.35 seconds with just one rotation of the scanner. This innovation means it is now possible to image the entire heart and brain in a single rotation and in a fraction of a second.
3.0 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
Ultra high field 3 Telsa MRI provides faster and better scanning.
Ultra high field 3.0 Tesla MRI is a revolutionary diagnostic imaging technology that provides detailed pictures of the inside of the body without using ionizing radiation. The imaging system is a low-invasive, state-of-the-art procedure that uses a powerful magnetic field, pulses of radio waves and a computer to produce images faster with unprecedented detail. 3.0 Telsa MRI can provide information on a wide range of conditions, including cardiac and vascular disease, stroke and brain disease, and musculoskeletal conditions in the knee and other joints. An imaging test such as MRS can help determine if a mass/tumor is malignant or benign, in certain cases.
Mammography
Mammography is a specific type of imaging that uses a low-dose X-ray system to create detailed images of the breast. A mammogram is used to aid in the early detection and diagnosis of breast disease. During mammography, the technologist will position your breast in the mammography unit. Your breast will be placed on a special detector plate and then compressed with a paddle. The compression flattens the breast so that the maximum amount of tissue can be imaged and examined.

Vacuum-Assisted Breast Biopsy (Mammotome Biopsy System)
Vacuum-assisted breast biopsy, also known by the brand name Mammotome, is a relatively new biopsy procedure that relies on image-guidance, such as mammography, to pinpoint the exact location of a breast abnormality. It is a vacuum powered instrument that collects tissue samples during one needle insertion. Under mammography guidance, a Mammotome probe is guided into a suspicious area of the breast to collect the abnormal tissue through one small (3mm) incision. There is minimal pain, scarring and recovery time. Patients can usually return to their normal daily activities immediately.
